As an energy consumer, you may often come across a number of confusing acronyms. Top of the list will likely be MPAN and MPRN when dealing with your electricity and gas supply. These are unique identifiers for your energy supply and play an important role in the delivery of services throughout the industry. They are used by multiple parties across a variety of network systems to locate and manage the billing of your supply type. What is an MPAN Number?

MPAN stands for Meter Point Administration Number, and is the unique identifier for your electricity supply point. As your energy supplier, we may ask you to confirm this for certain enquiries, along with other parties involved in the distribution and transmission of your electricity, for example your local distribution network (DNO). The entire MPAN consists of 21 digits and the 13 numbers on the lower line is what you will need to reference. This number is specific to your business property and supply connection, enabling us to accurately identify your meter type and therefore allocate the relevant charges for your electricity usage.

What is an MPRN number?

MPRN stands for “Meter Point Reference Number,” and it serves the same purpose as an MPAN number but for your gas supply instead of electricity. This reference code is essential for identifying your gas meter and connection point. Like the MPAN number, your MPRN number is crucial when switching gas suppliers or dealing with any gas supply-related queries with us.

Where can I find my MPAN and MPRN numbers?

You will find your MPAN number on your electricity bill under the ‘Electricity Used’ page. It should be underneath your account number and look just like the one pictured above. What is the difference between an MPAN/MPRN and an MSN number?

Meter Serial Number that’s a unique number used to identify the actual electricity or gas meter. You should be careful to not confused the MPAN nor MPRN numbers with the MSN. Your Meter Serial Number is a combination of letters and numbers which can be found directly on the meter itself. This can also be found on your SmartestEnergy Business invoice on the electricity or gas used page.
