Frequently asked questions

Our eight top tips. Save money and energy with these tips straight from our experts.

Start with an audit

  • Conduct an energy audit to get ideas for reducing your energy bills and combating inefficient energy habits.
  • Energy auditors can identify problem areas and give you advice towards fixing them.
  • You can also carry out a DIY audit. Even a basic investigation can give you some insight into where you’re wasting energy.

Monitor and track your energy consumption

  • Take regular meter readings and compare consumption over a number of months to see how and when you’re using the most energy. Consider how you could cut wastage.
  • Install a smart meter if you don’t already have one. This will save your business time and money through accurate billing and automated readings. It will also help the UK smart grid actively monitor usage and ensure energy demands are met, preventing blackouts.
  • If you’re a SmartestEnergy Business customer, use our Web Analyser Service to understand your usage and work out where you can make changes to cut costs.
  • If your business manufactures a tangible product, try to measure ‘energy use per product item’ so you can spot patterns and identify where savings could be made.

Think “energy saving” before you buy

  • Invest in advanced HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems with smart thermostats to regulate temperature efficiently. This can help to reduce energy usage and, in turn, lower your monthly bills.
  • Invest in double-glazed windows and blinds – they prevent heat from escaping, reduce drafts and mean you need fewer radiators.
  • Upgrade to A-rated energy-efficient certified appliances in your kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Train your staff on how to maximise the energy-saving features of modern appliances.

Maximise energy-saving performance

  • Conduct regular maintenance of all systems and equipment to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency whilst preventing any health and safety risks.
  • Service your boilers every year or every six months if they’re oil boilers. Make sure you use a reputable firm! This could reduce your bills and hopefully lead to fewer breakdowns. It’s also a good idea to insulate boilers, hot water tanks, pipes and valves to reduce heat wastage.

Turn that dial down or off

  • Heating your workplace can account for between 20-40% of your business energy costs.
  • Equipment, lighting and heat from bodies add to the indoor temperature, so we recommend you set your office temperature to 19C.
  • Where possible, turn off all PCs, machines, equipment, lighting and air-conditioning units overnight.
  • Encourage your employees to do their part by turning off lights and equipment when they are not in use.  Label equipment and control switches so that it’s clear how to turn the lights off or on. Nudge the behaviour you want with signs saying, “Please remember to turn the lights off”.
  • In a large office, assign a member of staff as your ‘energy champion’ and give them a toolkit to follow to positively affect their colleagues’ behaviour.
  • Consider fitting timers to shared equipment such as photocopiers and water coolers to ensure they are switched off outside of business hours.

Shed light on how to use less energy

  • LED or other energy-efficient options across your building(s)can make a huge difference to your bills. Natural lighting, switching off lights when the room isn’t in use, motion sensors and dimmable lights are also a smart idea.
  • Electrical devices linked to your mobile or laptop can ensure lights are switched off even after you’ve left the premises.

Investigate energy-saving technologies and products

  • The Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme (ECA) enables you to claim 100% first-year capital allowances on investments of qualifying equipment. You could potentially write off the whole cost of your investment against your taxable profits for the period in which you make an investment.
  • You may qualify for an interest-free loan from the Carbon Trust. Check out their website for more information.
  • You might think that renewable energy would be more expensive, but our low-cost REGO backed products prove that this isn’t necessarily the case.

Drive a hard bargain

  • Electric cars emit around a third of the CO2 of a petrol car in the UK. You may be able to get a government grant to subsidise the cost of your business using electric cars.
  • If your business relies heavily on the use of transport, you may also want to seek advice from The Energy Saving Trust (EST).
