Climate Action Project – Fuel-efficient Cookstoves In Uganda

Fuel-efficient cookstoves in Uganda
Around one-third of the world’s population still relies on dangerous cooking methods, such as burning charcoal, firewood, and animal dung. These practices not only produce harmful indoor air pollution but also contribute heavily to greenhouse gas emissions, intensifying climate change. In this blog, we’ll dive into how the Fuel-efficient Cookstoves Project in Uganda is tackling these issues, helping to reduce emissions, curb pollution, and protect human health for a more sustainable future.
What The Global Challenge of Hazardous Cooking Methods

In many low-income communities, limited access to affordable and reliable energy keeps people in energy poverty, with women disproportionately affected as they often manage household cooking. Clean cooking technologies offer a chance to reduce emissions while empowering communities socially and economically. A shift toward these solutions, supported by global cooperation and local initiatives, can help ensure that the 2.3 billion people lacking safer alternatives gain access to sustainable, affordable options—improving health and transforming lives.

The Fuel-Efficient Cookstove Project

Based in Uganda, the Fuel-efficient Cookstoves initiative run by UpEnergy tackles the issue of energy poverty through distributing long-lasting, fuel-efficient cookstoves that can serve families for at least five years. These durable stoves can reduce charcoal consumption by up to 55%, saving households money while also cutting down on environmental impact. Additionally, with the cookstoves being 100% locally manufactured, this helps create jobs and stimulate the local economy throughout the supply chain.

Transforming Lives: The Impact of Fuel-Efficient Cookstoves

Fuel-efficient cookstoves do more than just reduce emissions; they save money, cut down cooking time, and lessen the need for frequent trips to gather fuel. This frees up valuable time for families to focus on critical priorities, like education, healthcare, and boosting their income. Importantly, the initiative empowers women and girls, who are often disproportionately affected by climate disasters. By equipping women with the resources to drive solutions, the programme fosters meaningful, lasting change in communities while promoting social equity and sustainable development.

Smartest Climate Action – How You Can Get Involved

Every month we’ll be sharing our sustainable project spotlight via our InfoHub and other socials. The projects will vary from nature-based conservation such as this one, to community carbon avoidance to renewable energy funding and more.
