Low energy mode

The UK has set an ambitious target of reaching Net Zero by 2050, requiring a fairer, cleaner, and more flexible electricity system. A key component of this plan is Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement, which enables smarter energy management and supports the transition to a low-carbon future.

Understanding the changes

Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS), backed by Ofgem, will take effect on 2nd July 2027, bringing significant changes to the electricity sector. This initiative aims to create a more affordable and flexible electricity system by leveraging real-time data from smart meters and Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) meters to improve efficiency and transparency.

Historically, large businesses had their electricity usage recorded every half-hour, while smaller businesses relied on estimated readings. With smart meters and AMR meters now widely available, all businesses—regardless of size—can benefit from accurate, real-time energy tracking.

Smart meters and AMR meters play a key role in enabling half-hourly settlement, as they continuously record electricity usage and transmit data across the energy network. This allows for more efficient electricity distribution, improved demand balancing, and better cost management. By providing precise consumption data, MHHS helps businesses move towards a more sustainable and cost-effective future.

Why it matters for your business

MHHS is designed to support a smarter, more efficient energy system, benefiting and empowering businesses of all sizes to manage their electricity and take an active role in guiding the shift towards a greener electricity system as the industry moves towards decarbonisation.

There are many benefits, for all market participants, including:

  • More accurate and transparent billing, improved service delivery for all electricity customers
  • Better daily visibility of usage data, make informed decisions aimed at reducing electricity consumption
  • New innovative products based on time-of-use, offering customers opportunity to reduce costs
  • Enhanced network data, enabling the energy network to better forecast customer supply and demand
  • Advancing the UK’s progress towards sustainability and achieving Net Zero carbon emissions

Preparing for the transition

Stay informed

HHS won’t disrupt electricity supply but may help businesses optimise energy use and reduce costs. No immediate action is needed, but staying informed is key.

For businesses with smart meters and AMR meters

The transition will be automatic and seamless, with meter readings updating to the new system without any noticeable changes.

For businesses without smart meters and AMR meters

Businesses without a smart meter or AMR meter will need an upgrade to enable half-hourly settlement. We will contact affected customers before March 2026 to arrange the installation of a smart meter or perform any necessary upgrades.

Maximise efficiency with real-time energy insights

By adopting this new system, businesses can enjoy the efficiency, precision, and potential savings that come with real-time energy tracking.
